I haven't been in school for a few years now but for some reason I always get that "back to school" feeling around this time. It's like Tom Hanks says in You've Got Mail  "Don't you love New York in the fall? It makes me wanna buy school supplies. I would send you a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils if I knew your name and address." Of course, I don't really have classes to start preparing for or a summer break but I still get the nostalgic feeling of a fresh start.

So I have my own back to school rituals. I've decided that ambiguous time between really summer and really fall is a great time to reorganize, clean up, clean out and hit the reset button. I admit to being organized, and terribly opposed to clutter, but please just don't open the drawers in my house.  Since Labor Day is the official end of summer, and chances are I haven't done this since New Year's, I open the drawers and reorganize them. I straighten the pairs of jeans, I pull out the ones that were bad choices and have been worn once, I put the shoes back from the bottom of the shoe rack where they all seem to congregate and put my cardigans in order. Repeat with the kitchen, and the bathroom and if I'm feeling especially brave that one (or my case, two) drawer where you just toss everything until you figure out where it really supposed to go. If you don't think you have such a drawer, try looking in the top drawer of dressers, desks and your kitchen. When you find gum, a tape dispenser, a nail file, three sharpies, at least one needle and thread, and a sandwich club card, you've found the drawer I'm talking about.

Of course while I'm going through all of these things and rearranging my tupperware, I'm also taking stock of how the year has gone. I always set a few resolutions at the outset of a year, but I never really take them seriously. So as I'm working I'm just evaluating where things are. What I can do better? What have I succeeded? Coolest thing I've done this year? That's right, I wanted to make sure I did such-and-such this fall. Then when I'm all finished I have the clutter in my house and in my head all taken care of. It's my version of freshly sharpened pencils, and clearly labeled notebooks.

Which makes me wonder...am I the only one with these sorts of routines? Or who experiences that back to school feeling each fall without ever stepping foot into a classroom? Leave a comment below - I'd love to hear what you think!
